Warrnambool is a coastal city located on Lady Bay 260 km south-west of Melbourne. Warrnambool is an important manufacturing & distribution centre although it has managed to retain a relaxed seaside feel. Its natural advantages render it a popular family destination in summer.

Warrnambool is known for its rugs & blankets. Other local industries include milk-processing & dairy product plants, a woollen mill which dates back to 1874

Warrnambool is noted for its safe, sheltered beaches, its moderate climate, its parks & gardens, one of the finest racecourses in the state, & Logans Beach where southern right whales come within view of the shoreline to give birth each year between June & October.

Surf, rock, sea & river fishing are popular, particularly at Levys Beach, Killarney Beach & the Hopkins & Merri rivers. There are several fishing competitions in the course of the year.

As the only city on the Shipwreck Coast, it is not surprising that Warrnambool has had a long and colourful history. Today it showcases that past in many exciting ways.

The city has a thriving arts & events scene, excellent restaurants serving the best of the freshest local produce & a relaxed café culture, most evident at the "bottom end" of Liebig Street.

Historical evidence indicates Warrnambool’s maritime links extend back to the Portuguese in the 1500s. Later, during colonial expansion of the 1800s, the treacherous coast earned an infamous reputation as a ships’ graveyard with hundreds of ships lost, No wonder it has the title “The Shipwreck Coast”.

Warrnambool offers swimming, surfing, boating, yachting & fishing from a number of beaches. Lady Bay is the main swimming beach, opposite Lake Pertobe Adventure Playground. It also is ideal for wind-surfing & yachting. Levy’s Point is a surfing & fishing beach. It is not suitable for swimming. Shelly Beach is great for shell collecting. Stingray Bay, at the mouth of the Merri River, is safe for swimming.

Billed as Warrnambool’s “mini Niagara”, the Hopkins Falls are 13km north-east of the city, set amid rolling countryside.
