Portland is a scenic holiday centre situated on Portland Bay 361 km west of Melbourne & 75 km east, of the South Australian border. It is a major exporting centre for the produce of western Victoria & eastern South Australia - principally wool, grains. The local economy also includes an aluminium smelter, the fertiliser industry, woolstores, & the fishing industry.

Portland offers visitors opportunities to explore rugged landscapes, discover a colourful history, get back to nature, surf some great waves, hoist a sail in a brisk wind, catch a fish, wander historic streets, dine on great food, or just relax & enjoy. Portland has beaches for swimming, surfing & other water-based activities, a fascinating waterfront & lighthouses to explore.

Portland boasts some of the best surf beaches this side of the world-famous Bells Beach. The choice spots are the Watertower, Blacknose, Crumpets, Yellow Rock & Murrells. For swimming, there are safe sandy beaches on the city's doorstep at Nuns beach & Henty beach.

The two lighthouses near Portland look out over vastly different seascapes. The 1859 Portland lighthouse overlooks calmer harbour waters & is located at Whalers Point. Cape Nelson lighthouse, built in 1884, warns mariners of the treacherous waters around the rugged cape.
