Portland is a scenic holiday centre situated on Portland Bay 361 km west of Melbourne & 75 km east, of the South Australian border. It is a major exporting centre for the produce of western Victoria & eastern South Australia - principally wool, grains. The two lighthouses near Portland look out over vastly different seascapes. The 1859 Portland lighthouse overlooks calmer harbour waters & is located at Whalers Point. Cape Nelson lighthouse, built in 1884, warns mariners of the treacherous waters around the rugged cape.
