Anglesea was originally known as Swampy Creek.

The region was settled in the 1830s by squatters attracted to the freshwater creek & grazing land.

Anglesea developed as a convenient stopover for the mail coaches which plied the southern coastline in the 1850s. By the 1880s McMillan's House, which is still standing, was the local stopping point.

Today it is a popular holiday destination because it combines a good beach with plenty of holiday activities. The fishing is excellent in the local area. So too is the surfing, sailing & windsurfing. Not surprisingly the town's population increases dramatically in the summer months.

Anglesea, just 1.5 hours from Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road, offers the best of swimming and surf beaches, Otway Ranges, spectacular views, walks & shopping. The bush is filled with wildlife & spring sees the wildflowers bloom.

Anglesea has some of the best beaches along the Great Ocean Road. In fact, they rank among the best you will find anywhere in Australia.

Main Beach
The wide sandy expanse of main beach, beside the Anglesea River, attracts swimmers, surfers, & those who enjoy some fun in the sun.

Point Roadknight
Just around the bay is the long sweeping
arc of Point Roadknight beach. Popular with families because the shallow, protected waters are safe for young children. There is plenty of sand to stretch out on. The calm waters are also popular with windsurfers and sailors.

Surfing Beaches
For some serious surfing action, beaches around Anglesea offer great waves all-year round. On the world stage, Bells Beach is recognised as one of the best. Just a few kilometres away, the beach is the annual site for a round of the world surfing championships. Bells is for experienced surfers. There are many other top surfing spots along the coast around Anglesea, including Urquhart Bluff, Fairhaven & Eastern View.

Anglesea's natural environment is famous for the heathlands, recognised for their importance with listing on the register of the National Estate. The marine environment has many unique species, while the range of wildlife includes more than 30 species.
