In 1931 the construction of the Hoover Dam brought an influx of construction workers which started a population boom & gave the Valley’s economy a much needed boost during the Great Depression.

World War II brought the defence industry to the valley. The isolated location made Las Vegas an ideal site for military & defence related industries. After World War II, lavishly decorated resort hotels & gambling casinos offering top-name entertainment came into existence. Tourism & entertainment took over as the largest employer in the valley.

Las Vegas is sometimes called "Sin City" due to the popularity of legalized gambling, availability of alcohol any time of the day & night & various forms of adult entertainment. In recent years many massive casinos have been built & the emphasis has turned from gambling & other "adult" pursuits to entertainment for families.

The economy is diversifying into light manufacturing, textiles, banking & other commercial interests assisted by the lack of any state, individual or corporate income tax, & very simplified incorporation requirements. The greater Las Vegas metropolitan area is the fastest growing centre in the United States.
