Denver located where the midwestern plains give way to the Rocky Mountains is the largest city & capital of Colorado, USA. Denver is nicknamed the Mile-High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile above sea level. The city records its "Mile High" status with a gold band embedded in the steps of the state capitol.

Many people pass through the Denver on their way up to the Colorado ski areas which include: Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Loveland Basin, Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Winter Park, Steamboat & Aspen.

Denver was founded on November 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush when a group of gold prospectors from Kansas arrived. The town site was named Denver City to curry favor with Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver but ironically Governor Denver had already resigned from office. Denver City was a frontier town, with an economy based on servicing local miners with gambling, saloons, livestock & goods trading.

The Colorado Territory was created in 1861 & Denver City was incorporated on November 7, 1861 & served as the Arapahoe County Seat from 1861 until consolidation in 1902. In 1865, Denver City became the Territorial Capital. On August 1, 1876, Denver became the State Capital when Colorado was admitted to the Union.

Denver has also been known as the Queen City of the Plains because of its important role in the agricultural industry of the plains regions along the foothills of the Colorado Front Range.

Denver has a climate with four distinct seasons. While Denver is located on the Great Plains, the weather of the city & surrounding area is heavily influenced by the proximity of the Rocky Mountains.
