Juneau is a popular tourist destination & one of Alaska's most important ports. Juneau is unique in that it is accessible only by air & sea. Annually cruise-ship passengers visit the city between May & September.

In May 1882 the Alaska Mill & Mining Company was established with the construction of a five-stamp mill. Gold production peaked in 1915 & more than $70 million of gold was produced before the final  mill closed in 1944 as a result of high prices & labor shortages due to World War II.

Juneau had developed as a transportation & regional trading center & became Alaska's capital in 1906. Today local, state or federal government employs one out of every two workers and tourism is the largest private-sector employer in Juneau.

Nearby Glacier Bay, Admiralty Island & the Juneau Icefield offer spectacular scenery & sightseeing.
