Whale Surfing

Christchurch New Zealand

On a recent trip to Christchurch New Zealand I was having lunch at New Brighton Beach. After lunch I had the opportunity to experience something the locals have been doing for years - Whale Surfing.

Around the world travellers can get up close to whales while on a whale watching tour.

Whale Surfing in Christchurch is a completely different experience. Anyone who wants to swim out to the whale can enjoy the experience.

I was there during July which is the middle of the local winter & the water was so cold it was like walking on ice. This didn't stop the whale who loves to come out & play anytime.

The best place to surf is on his tail. He seems to enjoy this the most with no problems.

Young children can surf on his head but must be careful not to block his blow hole. I tried to climb on the whales head but the skin was to slippery.

Whale Surfing is a great experience & requires little skill or equipment.

While some whale friendly groups may not approve of the activities the whale is unharmed & seems to enjoy it.

Whale surfing also gives groups of Tourists a chance to get up close with whales & see them in a different light, this may help to reduce the hunting of whales by some nations.

Whale Surfing is a free experience run near New Brighton Pier 7 days a week.
