Christchurch Cathedral is located in the centre of Christchurch & has long been a meeting place for people catching up in town.
Regular church services are held in the Cathedral & it is open during the day for visitors to take a free look around & see some of the history of Christchurch.
What makes the Christchurch Cathedral different to other churches tourists see the world over is that you can climb almost to the top of the spire. See the small balcony just above the level of the church roof in the picture above.
Climbing the Cathedral is something most kids that grow up in Christchurch do either as part of a school trip or during the school hoildays.
You buy a token from the gift shop & head through the Cathedral to a small room with a slightly hidden door near the front of the building.
Drop the token in the slot & start up the stairs. Part of the climb is metal steps & part of it is old well worn stone steps.
The stair way is very narrow but there are a couple of stops along the way to view the bell ringers room & later the bells themselves.
The last section is up a steep set of stairs which brings you to an open platform. From here there are 4 balconies that give fantastic views of Christchurch in all directions.
