Declared a city in 1948, Timaru was originally named Te Maru, or "place of
shelter" - Timaru was one of the few places along the eastern coastline
where travellers could find sanctuary
from the Pacific Ocean.

In 1859 the English ship Strathallan arrived with the first significant
influx of 120 immigrants - these days almost 27,000 people live in the city
situated on rolling hills that overlook Caroline Bay.
