Sydney is Australia’s largest & best-known city.
Set around the bays & inlets of Port
Jackson & extending along the coast.
Sydney was the
first site of European settlement on the Australian continent founded in
1788 to the north of Botany Bay on the magnificent foreshores of Port
Jackson, or Sydney Harbour as it is known today.
From 1825 until
the 1860s Sydney was a prison outpost slowly evolving into a society
where free settlers & convicts worked together. The
turning point occurred in May 1851 when Edward Hargraves brought 120
grams of gold to Sydney triggering the goldrushes. Overnight workers in
Sydney downed tools & headed for the goldfields. Prospectors from
all over the world passed through Sydney eager to try their luck on the
goldfields.
